Students (PhD and Grad Classes)

Past Students
I am proud of my past PhD students. They used their PhD experience with me to further their careers in ways that best fit their interest.   I am proud of my students who have gone into teaching, academic research or more applied industry research, or to start up companies.  Not only did they do great things, the time I spent advising them was some of the most enjoyable parts of my day!
  1. Zach Pardos is now a tenure track professor at UC Berkeley.  While at WPI he did some really great work on Bayesian Networks related research, wrote a number of papers, and won one of the KDD Cup Prizes.
  2. Mingyu Feng is now a Research Scientist at SRI (a non-project research focus institute that used to be called Stanford Research International). In 2016 she will be CoChair for EDM. See this and that.
  3. YuTao Wang joined Google in Sept 2015.  She did wonderful work in data mining, learning new features, and pushing the field to do data mining on important topics (like how we can know if students will learn a topic, rather than just how they will do on the next problem). (PhD Disseration)
  4. Yue Gong is now at Facebook (WPI pageLS&T Page).  Her work lead to identifying, and naming, "wheel spinning" (with Joe Beck) which is the state of persisting but not productively.  (We just got a new NSF grant based upon this work so we can better understand its antecedents as well consider 10 different experiments to help students.)
  5. Jozsef Patvarczki Graduated 2012. He joined a  startup in Silicon Valley that provides a Hadoop-as-a-Service  (Hadoop is a scalable database, and he did hits thesis focusing on paralleling databases).
  6. Leena Razzaq is a great teacher at Northeastern University.  Her research helped create ASSISTments!

Graduate Classes
I generally teach one graduate class a year on either Educational Data Mining(here), Creating Better Educational Technology (here) or Running Randomized Controlled Trials on Educational Technology (here).  Examples of these are listed below

Adviser of 24 Masters and seven PhD Dissertations.
